The Actor
In theater, Ray Baker was nominated best actor in an ensemble by the African American Theater Alliance for his portrayal of Turnbo in Jeff nominated, August Wilson’s Jitney, at Pegasus Theater Company. He appeared in Trouble in Mind at Northwestern University. Ray also understudied and performed in the Cormac McCarthy play, The Sunset Limited at Steppenwolf and Off Broadyway. He was recently seen in a staged reading, Speak Out Against Violence at Rivendell Theater in Chicago. Prior to that, Ray played Senator Williams in Washington Heights, a play that advocated for safe sex and prevention of HIV/AIDS.
Ray played Durant on a Warner Brothers TV episode of “ER” and was a featured extra in Fox Searchlight Pictures, Malcolm D. Lee feature film, “Roll Bounce.” He also appeared in a number of short films.
He played Griggs in the Congo Square production of The Talented Tenth and played Coach, Birdy and The Announcer in The Chicago Children’s Theater production of Honus and Me at the Goodman in Chicago. He performed in several plays at ETA Creative Arts Foundation including Clayborne in Riffs and Rev. Cameron in Murderer on the Hill District. He performed as GGG In the Collaboraction, Sketchbook production of L. A. 8:00 A. M. He Portrayed Thomas Thurman in Good Boys at Chicago Theater Company and Willie The Kid Cayman in Cementville at Mary Archie Theater Company.
Ray has studied acting at Herbert Berghof (HB) Studio in New York under Earl Hyman, Austin Pendleton and others. He has studied under Jan Green and viewpoints under Robin Chaplik at Piven Theater Workshop.
He also studied under Erica Daniels at Chicago's Audition Studio. Ray participated in Bill Duke's Actor's Boot Camp at the Acapulco Black Film Festival in 2000, 1, 2, 3.
